Painting a dead fish can be art? That sounds FISHY but so true!! “Let’s try the Art of Gyotaku, Fish Printing!!”

Fukuoka City Museum is currently full of people since the museum week has begun.
We had an event with “Gyotaku”, Fish Printing on May 15th.
It was a pre-event of our special exhibition ” THE ANGLING CULTURE IN JAPAN; History, Diversity, and Philosophy of Fishing” that will start on Saturday, September 17th.

We had two sessions on that day. One was with 10 Japanese participants and the other was for foreigners who were invited to try the Japanese art, “GYOTAKU”.

Both sessions ended with success. This is a report of the event.

Morning session:
This was their first ever time trying the colored “GYOTAKU”.

Look at those serious faces! The complicated method is really difficult to replicate!

In the end, everybody was happy with the result thanks to the professional help!
Some were saying they want to try it by themselves too!

Evening Session:
For the evening session, we invited foreigners who reside in Fukuoka to try “GYOTAKU”!
They looked stunned when they first saw the real fish sitting right in front of them!
However, they were doing a great job with the fish printing! All looked great and were completed really fast!

Believe it or not, Echo from America had previous experience with “GYOTAKU” when she was in the U.S.! She learned how to do at her kindergarten. It is so surprising to see how popular gyotaku is overseas! She told me that the method she was taught in the art class was totally different from this time. In her class, one side of the the fish was dipped into a bowl of paint and then pressed onto the paper and was that easy. She was surprised to learn how much attention was required for creating the colored “GYOTAKU” this time!

Bene from “Bene no Fukuoka” also came to the event to try her hand at “GYOTAKU”.

She said she had heard of “GYOTAKU” but it was her first time trying it.
She said she had a lot of fun!

I’m so happy everybody enjoyed the unique Japanese culture of “GYOTAKU”.
Museum Week still continues! We have more events planned, so please come visit us!
